3 tips for pedestrians to reduce distractions

If you walk around the city, you might naturally text, make a phone call or listen to music. This type of behavior has become second nature for a lot of people with the accessibility of technology. Unfortunately, these activities also lead to catastrophic injuries and fatalities. According to a report by the Governors Highway Safety Association, almost 6,000 pedestrians died in traffic in 2016.

Do not overlook this critical information. It is crucial for you to stay safe as a pedestrian to avoid an accident. Continue reading for tips on how to reduce distractions and walk around Kansas City safely.

1. Avoid texting and phone calls

As tempting as it may be, just leave your phone in your pocket. The text and phone call can wait a few minutes. If you must send a text or make a phone call, simply stop in a safe place away from the street until you finish. Especially avoid these actions when crossing the street.

2. Take out your headphones

You might enjoy listening to music or podcasts as you walk from point A to point B, but this comes with its own risk. While your phone may be in your pocket, your ability to hear oncoming cars is reduced. Just because you are not visually distracted does not mean you are fully aware of everything happening around you.

3. If you cannot wait, be smart

After reading the above tips, there is probably still going to be a time where you check your phone while walking. If you absolutely cannot wait to check your texts, make sure you do so as safely as possible. Hold your phone higher so it is in your visual field or look up every few seconds and assess your surroundings.

The best way to avoid suffering a serious injury as a pedestrian is by not using any electronic devices while walking. If you are ever in a pedestrian accident, make sure you consult a personal injury lawyer as soon as possible.
