Complications from a broken leg

If you're involved in a car accident, a broken leg may seem like a relatively minor injury compared to what could have happened. Yes, it's painful and can take months to heal, but you escaped without a head injury or other more serious issues.

However, it is important to note that there can be significant complications that can make a broken bone a bit more serious than it first appeared. Some examples include:

Osteomyelitis

This is a bone infection. It can happen with an open fracture. The interior of the bone could be exposed to bacteria and fungi during the break.

Compartment Syndrome

This leads to swelling and pain around the broken bone. It's a neuromuscular condition that can even lead to disability in your muscles. Experts note that it's most likely with high-impact injuries.

Nerve Damage

Nerves that have been injured during the accident may not regenerate properly. You could experience numbness in the area that won't go away on its own.

Blood Vessel Damage

Similarly, blood vessels could be damaged and not heal properly. This can lead to circulation problems in the future.

Unequal Leg Length

This is generally an issue when children break their legs. Remember that bones grow from the growth plates at the ends. A fracture that extends through this growth plate can cause that bone to grow differently than it should. This could make one arm or leg longer or shorter than the other.

These complications could lead to extensive medical treatment and bills that far exceed what you expect with a broken leg. It's important to know what rights you may have to compensation.
