Semi catches on fire in deadly accident

Four vehicles crashed on I-270, and one person was killed. The accident involved a semi truck, which caught on fire, a van with a trailer, and two others.

The Missouri Highway Patrol said that the van attempted to change lanes while towing a Bobcat on a trailer. It doing so, it collided with a tow truck. The driver of the van then lost control and rammed into a car. The van flipped on its side. That's when it was hit by the semi, which then burst into flames.

The driver in the car was injured, as was the driver of the van, and reports said both were in serious condition. Those in the semi -- there was a driver and a passenger -- weren't hurt. The passenger in the van, however, was killed. He was 58 years old.

Pictures from the scene show the Bobcat sitting on the highway on its wheels, next to the overturned van. It is between the semi and the retaining wall, with the car right behind it. The end of the semi's trailer is blackened from the fire, as is the front end of the car, and the van is completely charred.

The crash itself happened in the southbound lanes, but emergency crews needed to close many of the lanes running in both directions as they worked to rescue the injured, put out the fire, and clear the debris from the highway.

Even small mistakes -- the van only clipped the tow truck -- can cause a chain reaction and a serious crash. After this happens, those who are hurt and the families of those who are killed may be able to seek compensation for all of these sudden and unexpected costs.
